Big Sister/Little Sister

Life-long mentoring and connections have proven effective to optimize decision making, thereby positively impacting social and economic outcomes for the young women, their families and their community.

The Big Sister/Little Sister Program is a mentoring and support program connecting experienced professional women with young Arab women (ages 18-25) who may benefit from guidance, coaching, and counseling.

Main Focus

Little Sister

This program targets young women who have been impacted by conflict in the Middle East and/or women who face difficult social, emotional and life challenges. The absence of guidance and direction may lead these women to make decisions that could negatively impact their lives and wellbeing.

Benefits to the Little Sister

  • Receive unbiased career or life advice from an experienced professional person or from a successful role model.
  • Receive guidance to navigate through her professional and life challenges.
  • Have someone believe in her and in her abilities; thereby, developing greater confidence.
  • Receive support that will enable her to make the appropriate choices in her life.
  • Expand her network with Challenge to Change Big Sisters and fellow Little Sisters.

Little Sister Criteria

  • Middle Eastern young women age 18 to 25.
  • Displaced or impacted by the recent conflict in the MENA Region.
  • Young graduates or professionals in need of guidance.
  • Young women struggling with life challenges that curtail their wellbeing and potential for growth.
  • Young women seeking professional or career development.

Being an effective Little Sister

  • Be open-minded and willing to learn
  • Be proactive and take initiative
  • Respect the Big Sister’s time
  • Understand Boundaries
  • Follow up on agreements
  • Be willing to allocate approximately 4 hours a month
    to the mentoring relationship program
  • Be willing to learn and develop
  • Be open about your goals, expectations, challenges and concerns
  • Actively listen and question
  • Seek advice, opinion, feedback, and direction from your mentor
  • Be open to constructive criticism/feedback and ask for it.
  • Give feedback to your mentor on what is working or not working
    in the mentoring relationship
  • Report when you think that the relationship with the Big Sister is not working out as planned

Big Sister

A Big Sister is a professional and successful woman who will use her experience and leadership skills to mentor a Little Sister and help her transform life challenges into positive experiences.

Benefits to the Big Sister

  • Develop her skills as a facilitator, guide, and advisor.
  • Learn fresh perspective from Little Sisters.
  • Build new relationships with fellow Challenge to Change Big Sisters.

Big Sister Criteria

  • Successful role models with work and life experience.
  • Possess leadership skills.
  • Be credible and non-judgemental in her approach.
  • Willingness to be accessible, committed and engaged during the length of the program.
  • Possess an understanding of the Middle Eastern culture and its impact on young women.
  • Interested and committed to the empowerment of young Middle Eastern women.
  • Commit to allocate at least two sessions a month to the mentoring relationship over the course of the six months mentoring program.
  • Willing to join a half day program on ground and attend events where possible, in person, or via video link online.

Being an effective Big Sister

  • Support the Little Sister’s development of professional and interpersonal competencies
  • Agree to, and schedule, uninterrupted time with the Little Sister
  • Create a supportive and trusting environment
  • Listen actively and act as a sounding board
  • Openly and honestly share “lessons learned” from her own experience
  • Provide helpful and constructive feedback
  • Seek assistance if questions arise that you cannot answer
  • Fill brief quarterly assessments about the progress of the relationship
  • Report when the Big Sister thinks that the relationship with the current Little Sister(s) is not working out as planned
  • Share her experience and mentoring approach with other Big Sisters if requested

What differentiates our program?

Our program aims to empower young women by providing mentoring to optimize decision making and create positive impact. Moreover, it is based on a thorough matching process, the mentoring relationship is goal-oriented, structured and time-bound.

The Big Sister/Little Sister Program aims to empower young women by providing mentoring to optimize decision making and create positive impact.

Commitment Period

The program is a 6 months minimum commitment, during which both Big Sisters and Little Sisters commit to allocating at least two sessions
(around 3-4 hours) a month.

Follow-up Method

Both Big Sisters and Little Sisters are requested to provide our team with brief quarterly assessments, so we can ensure that the set goals are achieved, and the mentoring relationship is going as planned.
